Scottish Government funding
Scottish Government HEF support has provided shelter, food and farming equipment to people in Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Lebanon and South Sudan.
The Scottish Government allocates £1 million annually, via a panel of humanitarian-focused charities, to respond quickly to global crises.

Ethiopia
This is Dasenech, South Omo, in south-west Ethiopia. Communities here are living on the frontline of the climate crisis, and it’s robbing them of their ability to grow food, make a living and thrive. When the usual rainy season fails to arrive; crops wither, animals starve, people wonder where their next meal will come from.
Earthquake response in Herat, Afghanistan
In September 2023 three earthquakes struck the Herat region of Afghanistan claiming 1500 lives, injuring more than 2600 and causing widespread destruction.

Support for families hit by food crisis in Malawi
More than 3000 families in 3 communities in Mwanza have been supported with small cash grants, thanks to funding from the Scottish Government’s Humanitarian Emergency Fund.
South Omo, Ethiopia
As world leaders discuss loss and damage at the critical United Nations climate talks in Dubai (COP28), Christian Aid has been awarded £250,000 by the Scottish Government to address the impacts of loss and damage in Dasenech, South Omo in southern Ethiopia.

South Sudan
As South Sudan, the world’s youngest nation, marks another year of independence the country continues to face multiple humanitarian challenges.
These include sporadic inter-communal conflict and climate shocks, forcing communities from their homes and increasing levels of food insecurity. In addition, fierce fighting in neighbouring Sudan which started in April, has forced over 150,000 people to cross the border, swelling the population of many towns and villages in the north of South Sudan.
Ukraine
Christian Aid has been awarded £250,000 from the Scottish Government’s Humanitarian Emergency Fund for a project in Ukraine which will allow people to plant vegetable seeds this Spring and will also fund repairs to homes damaged by missile strikes and help to rebuild water wells in 15 villages in Kherson and Mykolaiv Oblasts.
Christian Aid is working with Blythswood Care to deliver the work, through local partner Heritage Ukraine. Restoring food and water supplies were priority needs identified by the communities themselves.

Ethiopia
In July 2022, as East Africa experiences its worst drought in 40 years, the Scottish Government announced it would release £250,000 from its humanitarian emergency fund. Christian Aid received £125,00 of this funding to support those most vulnerable in South Omo, southern Ethiopia.
Afghanistan
Economic collapse compounded the devastating impacts of a changing government, Covid and drought in Afghanistan in 2021. The Scottish Government responded generously through the Humanitarian Emergency Fund and the Disasters Emergency Committee so that our partners could provide urgent food and hygiene packs.

South Sudan
In 2021, communities in Unity State were displaced from their homes due to climate change, conflict and Covid-19. We provided food packages and farm equipment to the worst affected households, thanks to HEF funding.
