The start of a new year invites reflection, renewal and courage. The Bible offers guidance and encouragement to face what’s new and unknown.

As you step into the year ahead, may these verses remind you of God’s steady presence . And may they be an encouragement you can share with those you care about.

Share hope as the new year begins

Families uprooted by conflict are doing everything they can to keep their children safe. Your support this Christmas could help families who’ve lost everything to war buy the food, medicines and essential supplies they need to survive.

What does the bible say about bringing in a new year?

Faith is believing in God’s promises and living them out each day. It is trust in God’s goodness through every season — a faith that grows through perseverance and love.

  • Joshua 1:9 – ‘Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.’

As a new year begins, this verse reminds us to face fresh challenges with confidence. God’s presence is constant, encouraging us to step into unknown paths without fear.

  • Galatians 6:2 – ‘Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfil the law of Christ.’

Starting a new year is an opportunity to strengthen community. Sharing each other’s struggles and offering support reflects God’s love and builds collective resilience.

  • Jeremiah 29:11 – ‘For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’

The new year brings uncertainty, but this verse reassures us that God’s plans are for our good. Even when life feels unpredictable, hope and a positive future are promised.

  • Isaiah 40:31 – ‘But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

At the start of a year, we may feel weary or unsure. By placing hope in God, we are renewed and empowered to move forward with energy and determination.

  • Romans 15:13 – ‘May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.’

Entering a new year is a chance to cultivate joy and peace. Trusting in God allows hope to grow within us, inspiring us to share that hope with others.

  • Psalm 31:24 – ‘Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord.’

This verse reminds us that hope is a source of courage. As we begin a new chapter, we can take heart, knowing God strengthens those who rely on Him.

  • Philippians 4:13 – ‘I can do all this through him who gives me strength.’

A new year often brings resolutions and challenges. This verse reassures us that with God’s strength, we are equipped to face whatever comes, big or small.

  • 1 Peter 5:7 – ‘Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.’

The unknowns of a new year can cause worry. This verse invites us to release our anxieties to God, trusting that we are cared for and supported.

  • Hebrews 10:23 – ‘Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.’

New beginnings call for perseverance. Holding onto hope, even in uncertain times, reminds us that God’s promises are reliable and enduring.

  • Proverbs 3:5-6 – ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.’

As we set intentions for the year ahead, this verse teaches that trusting God’s guidance – rather than relying solely on ourselves – helps us navigate life with clarity and purpose.

All verses are from the NRSV version of the Bible.

Why Chance’s story calls us to act

As we step into a new year, we’re reminded that renewal often begins in the hardest places.

Chance, fled her home when violence tore through her village. She carried her children through the night, searching for safety.

Today, she lives in a displacement camp and is doing everything she can to keep her family safe.

Her courage reflects the strength and determination found in so many families forced to flee.

A prayer for the new year

Loving God,
You are our light and strength.
Teach us to trust in you,
to face the new year with courage and hope,
and to act with love and compassion towards others.
May our words, prayers and actions bring comfort, joy and justice to our neighbours near and far.

Amen

Live out your faith

A new year is a chance to pause, reflect and start again. The Bible reminds us that new beginnings are opportunities to trust God, renew our hope, and live with courage and purpose.

As we move forward, faith calls us to act.

In daily life, this might mean giving our time, sharing our skills, caring for creation, or speaking up for justice. By putting faith into action, we help bring hope, comfort and change to those facing hardship, living out the values that guide Christian Aid’s work.
