Communities pushed to the brink
Anok Angok Kon lives in Aweil West County in South Sudan. She and her community are struggling to survive as South Sudan faces multiple crises. The climate crisis threatens food on tables, while a debt crisis leaves the Government unable to meet its citizens’ basic needs.
The continuous flooding over [recent] years has led to the destruction of harvests leaving many farmers unable to provide for their families… The situation has pushed communities to their limits.
Like many low-income countries, South Sudan has relied on loans from private banks to meet basic needs. In 2025 private lenders took South Sudan to the UK’s High Court for not meeting payments. Hundreds of millions of dollars, equivalent to almost half the Government’s revenue, was demanded. As debts rise the Government struggles to support ordinary people like Anok who are facing the brunt of the climate crisis.
The UK Government has the power to change this
Most of the debts that burden low-income countries like South Sudan are owed to private banks. The terms and conditions of 90% of these debt agreements are governed by English law (even if the lender isn’t based in the UK). This is why South Sudan could be sued in a London law court by private lenders.
This means the UK Government has the power to pass laws that could prevent these lenders from forcing countries to make vast payments at the expense of their citizens.
They can also introduce legislation to make the biggest polluters pay for the impacts on the climate crisis, in South Sudan and beyond.
What you can do
A harvest supper is a great opportunity to sit down with your MP and have a conversation about the climate and debt crises. Use the resources below, invite your MP to break bread and ask them to:
- Support new ‘debt justice’ legislation that forces corporate lenders to cancel or negotiate the debt carried by low-income countries.
- Support making the biggest polluters pay to support low-income communities hit by the climate crisis
In Scotland or Wales? You can also invite your newly elected MSP or MS to be part of the conversation. While devolved governments have different powers, they can still take action for a more just world.
The climate and debt crisis are wounds on God’s world. This harvest let’s put faith into action and stand with Anok as we call for climate and debt justice.
