A ceasefire is the beginning not the end.

The fragile ceasefire in Gaza has brought the release of hostages and detainees, and relief from the daily bombardment and bloodshed. But as Palestinians return to what’s left of their homes, they face further loss.

"There’s a sea of pain that doesn’t get traded or released.Yes, hope flickers for a moment but the exhaustion, the loss, and the fear will still sit deep inside."

Hani Askari, Palestinian Centre for Human Rights.

Remind them that a ceasefire is the beginning, not the end of our call for justice and peace in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory. Without their urgent action, Palestinians and Israelis will be condemned to injustice and violence for generations to come.

Key points to make

Whether you write, email or meet them, urge your MP to call on the UK Foreign Secretary to challenge the Israeli occupation, uphold international law and support a just peace

The UK must:

  • Ban all UK trade with and investment in illegal Israeli settlements
  • Suspend the existing UK-Israel Trade Agreement, ending the UK’s preferential trade terms with Israel
  • Suspend all arms sales to Israel, until all violations of internal law cease
  • Ramp up its support for UN-led humanitarian relief, and demand Israel lifts all remaining aid restrictions on Gaza

Peace, accountability and justice

The UN Commission of Inquiry has found that Israel has committed genocide in Gaza. The illegal Israeli occupation continues, which means a daily reality of poverty, insecurity and abuse for Palestinians.

Peace is only possible with accountability and justice. Alongside a colossal need for humanitarian relief, all must be held to account for violations of international law, including the ongoing illegal occupation of the Palestinian territory.

The UK continues to enable the occupation through its special trading relationship with Israel and permitting trade with illegal settlements in the occupied territory. Despite ongoing violations of international law, the UK also continues to permit arms sales to Israel.

Explainers: trade and arms sales

Trade and illegal settlements :

Settlements are Israeli residential towns, illegally constructed in the occupied Palestinian territory. As well as homes, settlements host industrial zones encouraged by the Israeli Government through loans and subsidies. Illegal settlements force Palestinian communities off their land making them homeless and often jobless. These settlements are illegal under international law.

The UK Government has a legal responsibility to ensure that it does not support the illegal occupation of Palestinian territory. Our Government must act now and stop all trade with illegal settlements.

You can read and share this briefing exploring illegal settlement trade.

Arms sales:

The UK Government has a legal duty to prevent the sale of arms and their parts to parties where there is a risk they will be used to violate international law. However, arms sales to Israel continue. This includes parts of F-35 fighter jets that have been used to kill civilians in Gaza. According to a Channel 4 investigation, in June 2025 Israeli import of UK arms and their parts reached a record high in monthly value since records began.

The death toll in Gaza, which continues beyond the ceasefire and the ongoing occupation show there ongoing and significant risk that UK arms could be used in violation of international law.
